Baby boy is healthy now, to start off with. He was technically full-term (by 1 day) but had some issues common to pre-term babies.
We had been discharged and returned to the pediatrician for our follow up the following day. They had some concerns and sent us downstairs to the ER, who was woefully unprepared for a newborn. Actual quote from the ER doctor: “Get me a baby doctor!”
We thankfully got re-admitted to the NICU and they had to monitor and IV him until the doctor said he could leave. A lot of things went in our favor, but that didn’t make it any less difficult.
At home, we were greeted with a sick toddler (of course), a broken kitch en faucet , and a suicidal microwave.
At least my son appears to be doing ok now. My wife is recovering well and is a certified super-hero after all she’s been able to do.
It's been emotional.

My sister is a NICU charge nurse. It’s an interesting world. Congrats on the new one!

Ah, parenting. When our twins were born, we had family help for a couple of weeks, and the day my mom left one of the twins started a fever of 102. Went to the hospital where he was admitted, they did a spinal tap for meningitis, the works. That was Saturday, and I had a gig Sunday morning, plus a 3 year old at home. Everything worked out fine, as things usually seem to do. Best wishes with all of this. Just take one thing at a time.

My son was a month in NICU when he was born at 33 weeks. He’s now big strong maniacal almost 3.

Not sure how it was for you, but the nurses for NICU here were awesome. Our oldest spent a few hours there right after she was born.
I hope all goes well for you.

I’d second the observation on the NICU staff. Our youngest was born 8 weeks early, very small and an NICU resident for his first two months. I have never seen a harder-working, more dedicated staff anywhere... Any hour of the day or night (we were down there for feedings every two hours) the staff were 100% on it.
One of the most rewarding periods of my life were in and around the NICU. So it’s great news about your son. Savor every moment.

It’s emotional thinking about that...
Good luck to you!

Nurses were amazing, doctors were good, but liked to give us contradictory information. Lots of his numbers were borderline, so they would disagree on how to deal with that.

Thanks.

The skill set required for that job is insane. Dealing with all of the medical stuff and the anxious parents and the territorial doctors would be too much for most people.

Maybe someone could edit into a bunch of 10 second clips so I can watch it again in my free time.

Thanks, he's looking so much better now. Just heightens all of the new baby anxiety, though. Got the faucet fixed already!

I don't know how you made it through that. So glad to hear that he's healthy and maniacal.

I know the new baby anxiety well, even though my kids have fortunately always been really healthy. My second spent about a day in the NICU, and it was never a life threatening thing, and that was scar y enough.
Good job getting the faucet fixed. It’s always fun working on the house while dealing with new babies :)

Glad you guys are back home and all seems well. Nothing worse than a baby in the hospital.

Maybe I should clarify: I hired a plumber, who came out same day to fix it. My home repairs are bad enough when I’m well rested, I can only imagine if I’d tackled that job on new baby sleep.

During the midnight feeds you need to sit down and watch it with your new son
Introduce him to great cinema
What’s his name?
